One of my main responsibilities was reviewing new samples when they arrived for discrepancies and inconsistencies. We had many soft goods like harnesses and leashes but also some injection molded plastic components as well. As an intern I didn't get to work on the design process too much for new products but was able to learn a lot about multipart components.
A harness sample that I had to check for imperfections
A batch of leash sampels that I had to review
To conduct customer research we held a session at a dog day care center where dogs and their owners were invited to try some of our products. We had dogs of a variety of sizes and types try our leashes, harnesses, and after treat spreads. There were other sessions engaging with data marketing had gathered from surveys and feedback but testing the products with the actual dogs was the most fun way.
We had a large amount of samples from the development process that were complete products, just not the ones we went with. Instead of placing all of them into long term storage (which is what I see most of the time) they had me sort their sizes so we could donate them to a local shelter sorted.
